“Would you rather be a gramma or a normal person?” my favorite four-year-old in Spain asked me.

Well, of course, I don’t want to be normal!

Last Sunday was Mother’s Day, and I woke up thinking how continually grateful I am for my good mother.

And I can’t thank God enough for the huge privilege of being a mother to four wonderful young women and their dear husbands.

And, for almost 13 years, I have had the gift of being Gramma to some superkiddoes.

“What is a Family?” is the title of a book by Edith Schaeffer and I love some of the chapter names that answer that question.

A family is ….

….the perpetual relay of truth.

….the formation for human relationships.

….the birthplace of personality.

….a shelter in time of storm.

….a museum of memories.

I imagine myself, as a writer, like a curator of memories, displaying in this blog, as in a museum, some stories about how God has used ‘family’ – my first family, my second family, the third ones of my daughters (I so enjoy watching and making memories with them!) and also, the big family of God-given friends – through all the stages of my life and in various countries to teach me and remind me of God’s truth, to form and shape and shelter me.

And what a privilege it is to be ‘family’ for others.  To relay truth. To help form and shape and shelter others: such a gift it to be a part of so many families, to have so many people to love!

Today marks my four-score-and-tenth year.

The psalmist wrote, “Seventy years are given to us! Some may even reach eighty. But even the best of these years are filled with pain and trouble; soon they disappear and we are gone.  Teach us to make the most of our time that we may grow in wisdom.”  Psalms 90:10, 12

That is my prayer. May I keep growing in wisdom, learning that no matter the pain and trouble, each day is precious.

“What day is it?” Pooh asked.

“It’s today,” squealed Piglet.

“My favorite day!” said Pooh.

Mine, too.

And I gotta go.  Jake and my sister are waiting for me in the car. We are picking up two grandkids with their parents and heading out to picnic and find the last two of our 70 waterfalls.

My heart is full-to-bursting in joy and gratitude for God’s over-abundant mercy and blessing in my life.

I am so glad He didn’t make me a normal person!
